Harlem Shake to Open in May, Donate Plywood to School

Remember the Harlem Shake, the dance from 1980s Harlem that became a viral video phenomenon earlier this year, which became really annoying really quickly (in the way that viral video phenomenons tend to do)? What about the restaurant of the same name, which was planned before that stupid Youtube thing and has thankfully already outlived it? It’s getting close to opening.

Earlier this week, Harlem Bespoke got a look inside the restaurant, which appears to have a pretty slick retro diner feel?as Bespoke put it, it looks like it “came straight out of 1950s Harlem”?in keeping with the classic burgers-and-shakes menu. It’s targeting a mid-May opening.

And today the Daily News notes that in preparation for that, the plywood shed with the graffiti-style “Do the Real Harlem Shake” text, which became a mini-phenomenon in its own right, has come down. Rather than ditching it the restaurant has donated it to a nearby school that will use it as part of a set for a play.
